Basic Heating and Hot Water System Design & Specification

The Foundation certificate in heating and hot water design course is aimed at installers who have recently entered the industry or have little or no experience in the area of heating system design. The course is particularly useful for candidates moving in to the renewables industry, in particular the installation of ground and air source heat pumps, or for underfloor heating industry where accurate heat loss calculations are of paramount importance. The course will provide a good level of understanding for the design and specification of basic domestic heating systems, as well as size hot water storage cylinders. In addition, heating and hot water design will act as a stepping stone for operatives who wish to go on and complete the IDHEE full diploma. The course is accepted by IDHEE as a unit credit and will save two days attendance on the full diploma course. The course is based upon the CIBSE Domestic Heating Design Guide (DHDG) 2007 ISBN 1 903287 40 5. This qualification is based upon the National Occupational Standards as published by industry and is recognised by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme registration bodies as an acceptable qualification to join the scheme.

  • Course overview

    Learners will be trained and assessed in the following areas:

    • Comfort conditions and basic heating and hot water principles
    • Basic system types
    • Heat-loss calculations
    • System design
    • System specification and selection including emitters, pipe work, boilers and pump sizing
    • Sizing and selection of hot water systems

    While training covers pipe-sizing and pump-settings etc in theory, they are not part of the practical work. There are questions regarding these in the written assessment. Candidates wishing to progress to more advanced levels should apply for the IDHEE diploma course.

    Learners should have basic knowledge in the installation of heating and hot water systems.

    • Know the fundamental differences between a.c and d.c circuits within solar photovoltaic systems
    • Know the purpose of solar photovoltaic system components
    • Know the types, silicon characteristics and typical conversion efficiencies of solar photovoltaic modules
    • Know the fundamental design principles used to determine solar photovoltaic system module array size and position requirements.
    • Know the preparatory work required for solar photovoltaic system installation work
    • Know the layouts and the requirements for installing solar photovoltaic module arrays
    • Know solar photovoltaic system d.c and a.c circuit installation layouts within the scope of the relevant Engineering Recommendation for grid tied systems
    • Know solar photovoltaic system protection techniques and components
    • Know the requirements to test and commission solar photovoltaic systems
    • Know the requirements to handover solar photovoltaic systems
    • Know how to plan and prepare for the installation of a solar photovoltaic system
    • Know how to install solar photovoltaic system components
    • Know how to inspect and test a new solar photovoltaic system installation
    • Know how to commission a new solar photovoltaic system installation
    • Know how to handover a new solar photovoltaic system installation
    • Know the requirements for the routine inspection, service and maintenance of solar photovoltaic system installations
    • Know how to diagnose faults in solar photovoltaic system installations
    • Know how to rectify faults in solar photovoltaic systems
