City & Guilds Installation and Maintenance Electrician – Experienced Worker Entrance Test 2346-04

Course Overview

• What the test covers

  The test assesses knowledge and understanding of:

  • Health and safety legislation
  • Safe working practices and hazard management
  • Installing wiring systems
  • Electrical working practices
  • Supply systems, consumer equipment, earthing and protection
  • Electrical principles and calculations
  • Electrical components, circuits and wiring systems
  • Electrical design
  • Safe isolation
  • Inspection, testing and commissioning
  • Applying BS 7671 and using the IET On-Site Guide

  Test format

  • City & Guilds qualification number: 2346-04
  • Assessment: computer-based multiple-choice test
  • Number of marks: 55
  • Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Delivery: in-centre under formal invigilation
  • Grading: pass or fail
  • Indicative pass mark: approximately 60%
  • Test type: open book
  • Remote invigilation is not available

  Passing the test allows an eligible candidate to enrol onthe City & Guilds Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification(2346-03), or an equivalent EWA route offered by another awarding organisation.Enrolment must take place within six months of the pass result.

  Passing the entrance test does not itself conferqualified-electrician status. It provides entry to the Experienced WorkerAssessment route.

• Entry requirements

  This test is intended for experienced electricians who:

  • Are aged 19 or over
  • Have substantial relevant occupational experience
  • Have not completed a full Level 2 or Level 3 electrical theory qualification
  • Can demonstrate that their experience meets the requirements of the EWA Skills Scan
  • Are in a position to enrol on an approved Level 3 EWA route within six months of passing

  Applicants are typically qualified supervisors orexperienced workers with extensive industry experience. Earlier centre guidancerefers to experience of around ten years as typical; however, suitability isdetermined through an individual assessment rather than length of servicealone.

  Eligibility process

  Before a test can be booked:

  1. The training centre will discuss your experience and intended progression route with you.
  2. You must complete the EWA Skills Scan and provide any information requested to support your application.
  3. The centre will assess your suitability.
  4. If you are considered suitable, an Overview and Candidate Application Form will be submitted to The Electrotechnical Skills Partnership (TESP).
  5. Your test can only be booked after TESP has formally approved your application.

  Please do not book travel or make other arrangements untilthe centre confirms that your application has been approved and your test placeis secured.

• About the test

  At the test centre

  The test is completed on a computer and lasts 90 minutes.

  Before starting, you will be asked to:

  • Confirm your identity.
  • Check that your name and candidate details are correct.
  • Check that the correct test is displayed.
  • Follow the invigilator’s instructions.

  You may be given scrap paper by the centre. You must notbring your own paper into the examination room.

  Items that are not permitted

  The following must not be used during the test:

  • Mobile phones
  • Smartwatches
  • MP3 or MP4 players
  • Programmable calculators
  • Dictionaries
  • Notes or unauthorised study materials
  • Privately supplied scrap paper

  Any unauthorised electronic items must be switched off andhanded in or stored as directed by the invigilator. Pencil cases must betransparent. Any drink container must have its label removed.

• Results & resits

  Your result will be provided through a Notification ofCandidate Results. Keep this document safe, as it is the evidence required whenenrolling on an EWA qualification.

  A test registration remains valid for 30 days. Up to tworesits are permitted within that registration period, giving a maximum of threeattempts in total.

  All attempts must take place within the 30-day registrationperiod and the applicable published testing window. If you do not pass afterthree attempts, or do not complete the permitted attempts within theregistration period, you will normally need to wait 12 months beforeregistering again.

  If you pass, your result is valid for six months. You mustenrol on your chosen EWA route during this period.

• Reading Material & Text books required?

  • Candidates will have all the books made available to them to use whilst training from CCTS Liibrary, which are necessary to complete the course. However we do recommend that candidates purchase, for their own later use the following textbooks which can be purchased from us or seperatley online:-

    This is the newest Wiring Regulations, replacing the 2022 Brown Book.Updated for all four amendments including:

    2. IET Guidance Note 3 – 10th Edition (2026)

    This is the latest GN3, fully updated to BS 7671:2018+A4:2026.Includes updates on:

    • Identification of conductors

    • Prosumers electrical installations

    • New EFLI maximum permissible values

    • Updated inspection frequencies

    3. IET On-Site Guide – 9th Edition (2026)

    Updated to align with BS 7671:2018+A4:2026.Includes new topics such as:

    • Bidirectional/unidirectional protective devices

    • Stationary Secondary Batteries

    • Updated Zs values
