Course Overview

• Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria

  You learn how to:

  • Visually inspect electrical equipment, plugs, leads and extension cables.
  • Identify equipment classes, such as Class I, II and III.
  • Select and perform the correct electrical tests.
  • Use test instruments safely and interpret their readings.
  • Carry out earth-continuity, insulation-resistance, polarity, leakage/touch-current and functional checks.
  • Decide inspection and testing frequencies using risk assessment.
  • Identify unsafe or counterfeit equipment.
  • Record results, maintain equipment registers and label equipment.
  • Understand the relevant legislation and the IET Code of Practice.

  Assessment consists of:

  • A 50-question, open-book online exam, lasting 1 hour 45 minutes, with an 80% pass mark.
  • A practical assignment in which you inspect and test different classes of equipment and complete the documentation.

  The official programme has 35 guided learning hours, although we deliver the course intensively over two days. Candidates may choose to delay their exam to allow preparation and/or assessment outside that period (additional self study). Please discuss your individual needs with our tutors.

• prerequisites

  The qualification is intended mainly for electricians, maintenance staff, facilities personnel and people responsible for workplace electrical-equipment testing. City & Guilds lists no formal entry requirements, but it is for people aged 18 or over, and prior electrical knowledge is strongly advisable.

• Do I need this course?

  One important distinction: 2377-77 qualifies you in electrical-equipment/PAT testing; it does not by itself make you a qualified electrician or qualify you to perform EICRs on fixed electrical installations. Those activities normally require broader electrical qualifications, such as the relevant City & Guilds 2391 route which are design for practicilng & qualifie electricians

  Please Note: Your exam will normally take place at the end of the course. However, you feel that additional study time is required.   Our aim and KPI (Key Performance Indicator) is to achieve successful candidate certification within 30 working days from completion of exams/assessments, receipt of all prerequisite information (e.g. past certificates), and payment in full. Certification is subject to final approval by the relevant Awarding Body External Verifier.

• Reading Material & Text books required?

  Candidates will have all the books made available to them to use whilst training from CCTS Liibrary, which are necessary to complete the course. However we do recommend that candidates purchase, for their own later use the following textbooks which can be purchased from us or seperatley online:-

  For the City & Guilds 2377-77, the essential book is:

  IET Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment — 5th Edition

  • ISBN: 978-1-78561-966-3
  • Often informally called the PAT Testing Code of Practice
  • It is the main course textbook and the permitted reference for the open-book exam.
  • Make sure you buy the 5th Edition, not an older, cheaper edition.

  You’ll also need a non-programmable calculator for the examination.

  The City & Guilds qualification handbook and sample questions are useful, but they are free downloads rather than books.
